Norway is the first country to operate F-35 fighter jets with a significant proportion of sustainable aviation fuel. The first successful test flight with the more environmentally friendly fuel mixture with 40 percent biofuel took place on January 14. “This is a historic climate initiative that can further strengthen Norwegian defense readiness,” said Minister of Defense Bjørn Arild Gram.

The fuel referred to as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) comprises biofuel, synthetic aviation fuels and other recycled carbon fuels. The biofuel is produced from waste, residues and by-products.

Minister Gram: “Our fighter jets are currently responsible for around a third of direct CO2 emissions in the defense sector. The use of sustainable fuel can reduce emissions and increase security of supply. The aim is to contribute to achieving climate targets and improve operational readiness at the same time.”

“Every sector must achieve net zero, including the armed forces,” added Climate and Environment Minister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen. “This test program shows how important technological innovation is. In the long term, we want to increase the use of sustainable fuels in aviation. The armed forces are now part of this development.”

F-35 manufacturer Lockheed Martin recently approved the use of Synthetic Aviation Turbine Fuels (SATF) for the F-35 Lightning II. Extensive technical and strategic analysis was conducted to ensure that SATF meets stringent performance and reliability standards. In addition to the environmental benefits, the new fuel sources are expected to improve operational readiness by reducing dependence on the extended supply chain.

“Lockheed Martin is committed to ensuring the F-35 is ready for any customer mission at any time,” said Chauncey McIntosh, vice president and general manager of the F-35 program at Lockheed Martin. “The addition of new fuel sources helps accomplish this by diversifying the supply chain while maintaining operational excellence. As the cornerstone of the joint fleet, the F-35 will continue to provide air superiority for the U.S. and its allies for decades to come.”
