Recently Lockheed Martin with the support of the US Navy, celebrated the successful launch of a Trident II D5 Life Extension Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM). The Navy conducted Demonstration and Shakedown Operation-32 (DASO-32), in which an unarmed missile was launched in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California.
This brought the number of successful test launches to 191 since its completion in 1989. With this test, the submarine “USS Louisiana” demonstrated the readiness of its crew and the strategic weapon system for deployment, according to a recent press release. It also certified the crew for strategic patrols. https://militaeraktuell.at/militaer-des-jahres-awards-vergeben/ Jerry Mamrol, Vice President of Fleet Ballistic Missiles at Lockheed Martin, said: “As the Navy turns to the future of strategic deterrence at sea, our new generation of engineers and technicians are ready to meet the challenges of this next era. Lockheed Martin is already in the process of preparing and modernizing the missile for its future launch platform, the Columbia-class submarines.” Built and modernized by Lockheed Martin for the Navy, the D5 missile is a ballistic missile currently aboard U.S. Ohio-class and British Vanguard-class submarines. The three-stage ballistic missile with solid propellant and inertial guidance has a nominal range of 4,000 nautical miles and carries several independently targeted re-entry missiles.
