The European Common Radar System (ECRS) Mark 2 radar, which will be used by RAF Typhoon pilots in the future, has been installed in an aircraft for flight testing. The radar, developed by Leonardo and developed by BAE Systems into the Typhoon, has a multifunctional array (MFA) that can perform traditional radar functions such as search and target acquisition as well as electronic warfare tasks.
This enables the Eurofighter Typhoon to locate and disable an enemy’s radar with a powerful electronic jamming attack, while remaining out of range of threats. https://militaeraktuell.at/das-bundesheer-praesentiert-das-risikobild-2024/ Ross Wilson, VP Engineering, Radar and Advanced Targeting at Leonardo UK, said: “In parallel with the integration work on the prototype system approaching flight test, the ECRS Mk2 production design is also progressing rapidly. The radar’s processor, receiver and antenna power and control units have all been re-engineered to further improve the capacity, capability and performance of the Mk2 system in line with the new antenna and electronic warfare capability.” A prototype of the radar has been tested on the ground at a test facility at BAE Systems’ site in recent months before being fitted to the UK’s BS116 test and evaluation aircraft. Flight testing is scheduled to take place later this year.
