Leonardo and the Italian Armaments Directorate have signed a new multi-year contract to provide logistical support for the C-27J transport fleet of the Aeronautica Militare and the operation of the full-motion simulator at the International Training Center (ITC) at Pisa Air Force Base.

The contract runs from 2026 to 2028 and is based on a performance-based logistics model that ensures high operational availability of the twelve C-27J Spartans currently in service. The aircraft are stationed at the Pisa and Pratica di Mare bases. At the same time, Leonardo is responsible for the technical and administrative support of the ITC and the maintenance of the full-motion simulator there.

The C-27J Spartan is considered one of the most capable tactical transport aircraft in its class: two powerful turboprops, high structural robustness and pronounced system redundancy ensure exceptional reliability, maneuverability and operational flexibility – even on unprepared runways and under extreme environmental conditions. The modernized C-27J Spartan Next Generation variant enhances these capabilities with new avionics, optimized aerodynamics and additional equipment packages.

With over 275,000 flight hours to date, the Spartan has proven its reliability worldwide. The range of missions extends from tactical air transport to supplying troops over the “last mile” to disaster relief and firefighting.

The quick configurability of the cab is particularly appreciated:

  • Five standard roles – cargo transport, troop transport, MedEvac, cargo raid and paratrooper deployment – can each be set up in less than 30 minutes.
  • Six further mission configurations, including VIP transport, passenger transport, advanced MedEvac solutions, biocontainment and basic and advanced firefighting, are available as options.
