Under the auspices of the Italian Ministry of Defense Leonardo and KNDS have signed an agreement on the further development of cooperation. The common goal is to establish a European defense group and to work more closely together in the field of land-based electronics. The aim is to enable supranational cooperation projects in Europe by developing the future generation of platforms for armored vehicles, such as the “Main Ground Combat System” (MGCS).
In addition, Leonardo and KNDS have signed an agreement to jointly implement the planned procurement program for main battle tanks (MBT) with a solution based on the Leopard 2 A8. The companies will collaborate on the development, production and maintenance of these tanks for the Italian Army as well as the support platforms. The Italian Ministry of Defence is currently working on two major programmes to modernize its land forces: firstly, the procurement of the Leopard 2 A8 main battle tank and support vehicles and, secondly, new infantry fighting vehicles and combat support systems as part of the “AICS plus” programme.
