Another project by the Dutch armed forces: Following the recent announcement that the Netherlands is to purchase 46 new Leopard main battle tanksthe modernization of the air defence system is now on the agenda. The Norwegian defense company Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace the NASAMS and NOMADS air defense systems are to be acquired.

The Dutch government submitted a recommendation to parliament on October 14. According to this recommendation, the new systems will be acquired as part of the CITADEL program, a comprehensive air and missile defence program. The first systems are to be delivered in 2028. “The Netherlands’ plans to acquire NOMADS and new NASAMS systems will significantly enhance the country’s operational capabilities. In addition to NASAMS, the CITADEL solution also includes the National Manoeuvre Air Defence System, NOMADS – a mobile air defence configuration with short-range missiles that specializes in the protection of land forces in a contested land battle environment. NOMADS consists of two launch containers with two missiles each, a 3D radar and the Kongsberg Protector remote-controlled weapon station. Full integration of the NOMADS systems with NASAMS, as well as other NATO systems, enables autonomous multi-vehicle operations.
