Denmark acquires Naval Strike Missiles (NSM) from Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace as part of a fast-track procurement process in cooperation with Norway. “Modern Norwegian missiles on Danish frigates will strengthen the Nordic maritime defense. Closer cooperation and better coordination between our armed forces will increase security in our common region, including the High North,” says Norwegian Minister of Defense Tore O. Sandvik.

The NSMs manufactured by Kongsberg will replace the Harpoon missiles currently deployed on the Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates in the Danish Navy. The contracts for this government-to-government procurement were signed a few days ago by Kongsberg, the Danish Defence Materiel Agency (FMI) and the Norwegian Defense Materiel Agency (FMA).

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized the close cooperation: “The agreement is a great example of how Nordic defense cooperation is both close and effective. In a world characterized by uncertainty, it is absolutely crucial for our common security that we continue to develop our Nordic cooperation in the coming years.”

The procurement takes place within the framework of an implementation agreement between Norway and Denmark, which regulates Norwegian support. The agreement covers not only the missiles, but also ship-based equipment, training and logistical support from Kongsberg. The deliveries will take place between 2025 and 2030; the value of the contract has not been disclosed.

In addition, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and his Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen recently met to discuss closer cooperation in the defense sector, including investments in joint platforms, weapons systems and ammunition.

Sandvik also commented in this direction: “We will continue our close dialog with Denmark to identify further areas for cooperation, including maintenance and investments. We will also deepen our cooperation in joint training and exercises, which have already yielded positive results, such as with our Sea Hawk helicopters and the training of Ukrainian F-16 pilots.”
