Based on the decision made in 2019 to retain the airbase, Kaufbeuren will remain the long-term location of the German Air Force Technical Training Center (TAusbZLw). The aircraft technical training of technical personnel for the Eurofighter weapon system that already takes place here will be continued in the long term.
Following the completion of investigations into the further development of aircraft technology training for the Eurofighter weapon system, the German Air Force proposed to the Federal Ministry of Defense that Training Group V of the TAusbZLw, which was responsible for this, should remain in Kaufbeuren. This has now been approved by the ministry. This means that around 80 training and support posts with up to 100 course participants will remain at the site in the long term. The existing training infrastructure can continue to be used without interruption. The aim remains to ensure the continuous provision of high-quality aircraft training for the Eurofighter.

“I am delighted that we can continue our almost 65-year history of aircraft technical training in Kaufbeuren and shape it further,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz. “Being able to continue the training of technical personnel for the Eurofighter seamlessly and without the delays of a possible relocation is a good thing and the right decision in view of the influx of new aircraft and the level of clarity achieved with the Eurofighter in recent years.” Among other things, the TAusbZLw Abt Süd carries out weapon system-specific training on the Eurofighter and Tornado (at least until 2028) as well as parts of the basic aircraft technology training in Kaufbeuren. Parts of the radar and radar equipment training have already been relocated to Untermeitingen. The original decision to relocate further parts of the training there is currently being investigated, partly due to the planned establishment of the multinational A400M air transport unit (MNAU) there. Remaining at the Kaufbeuren site is one option.
