These days BAE Systems Hägglunds and Iveco Defense Vehicles (IDV) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the joint development and delivery of the BvS-10 all-terrain vehicle for the Italian army.
The agreement is aimed at designing the Italian variants of the BvS-10 and transferring their production to Italy. This industrial cooperation builds on the existing partnership between IDV and BAE Systems, which has already been established for the US Marine Corps ACV program (-> current news about the US armed forces) program. The aim is to offer the Italian army a snow vehicle tailored to its requirements.
The Italian army is currently using vehicles from the BV-206 family – also developed by BAE Systems Hägglunds. These are soon to be replaced by a new system. In addition to the BvS-10, the Bronco 3 from ST Engineering will also be part of this, Leonardo (as prime contractor) and Aris are also in the running.
The BvS-10 is already in service with the armed forces of Austria, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Ukraine. The US armed forces (Army and National Guard) use an unprotected variant. A possible introduction to the Italian army would therefore also bring logistical and training advantages – above all through interoperability with partner countries.
