“No fight without food, no movement without food.” Under this slogan, Upper Austrian Agriculture Minister Max Hiegelsberger and Upper Austria’s military commander Brigadier Dieter Muhr presented a project to strengthen cooperation in regional food purchasing on March 10.
Hiegelsberger and Muhr welcomed this step as the right and important way to bring more local produce to the plates of the approximately 3,000 members of the armed forces in Upper Austria. According to the two, regional quality depending on the season is also in greater demand from the basic military service today than it was a few years ago. The range of products from the region – be it fruit, vegetables, meat or fish – corresponds to the population’s desire to obtain food from their own country. The project also strengthens the drive for self-sufficiency and environmental protection, as it shortens transport routes and thus reduces the carbon footprint.
