A few days ago, the consortium handed over Iveco-Oto Melara (CIO) consortium handed over the vehicle at the Cecchignola military site in the presence of representatives of the Italian army the first modernized Ariete main battle tank, designated C2, to the armed forces. A total of 90 main battle tanks of this type will receive a technological upgrade.
The aim is for the tanks to meet the current operational requirements of the armed forces. In recent years, the Italian army has initiated a renewal process in line with this program. In addition to the modernization, the agreement with CIO includes ten years of logistical support for all vehicles.
The Chief of Staff of the Italian Army, Lieutenant General Carmine Masiello, stated in his speech: “Today’s ceremony represents a decisive step in a continuous and significant development: the delivery of the Ariete C2 tank, a symbol of innovation and cooperation between the army and the defense industry. It is not just a technical milestone, but the confirmation of a shared commitment to grow together and face the complex challenges of the future.”
In the course of upgrading the Ariete, several improvements were made in terms of mobility, power and command and control systems. For example, the engine displacement was increased, an electronically controlled common rail injection system was introduced and the supercharger system was updated. Engine power has increased by 20 percent to 1,500 hp and the significant increase in torque at low engine speeds ensures better performance in typical maneuvers such as turning, starting and restarting. The increased weight, engine power and torque made it necessary to upgrade the transmission and final drive.
In addition, the braking system has been updated, the tracks of the Ariete C1 have been replaced with a specially developed model and a new turret has been fitted. The tracks provide greater mobility for the crew thanks to a larger contact surface and a significant reduction in vibrations. The new turret guarantees greater interoperability, precision and safety. It also has modern systems that put it on a par with the latest generation of tanks.
The hydraulic servos have been replaced by more reliable and powerful electric drive systems, and the fire control system has been completely replaced by a digital fire control system based on the experience gained with the Centauro II. Stabilized digital optronics with the latest generation of TV and IR cameras were also integrated. Interoperability was ensured by the introduction of the new C2D N EVO command and control system and the four-channel SDR (Software Defined Radio) and satellite communication vectors connected to modern digital intercom systems.

The tank commander’s and gunner’s stations have also been redesigned to improve ergonomics. They are based on man-machine interfaces equipped with multifunctional screens. The driver’s station has been modernized thanks to the introduction of a new digital panel that also integrates the navigation interface and is connected to the command and control system. A new fire extinguishing and explosion protection system ensures the safety of the crew.
CIO President Claudio Catalano emphasized: “The Ariete modernization programme has enabled the Italian defence industry to rebuild strategic know-how in the field of tracked vehicles.” This will enable the Italian army to deploy the necessary armored capacities within the required timeframe.
“Deterrence is a prerequisite for security, and the armed forces are an irreplaceable bulwark for protecting our freedom and our values,” Masiello concluded.
