The first batch was delivered last year, and now Hensoldt the German Armed Forces with a further 90 Spotter 42s. The enhanced Spotter complements the Spotter 60 – also from Hensoldt – already introduced in the troops and replaces a predecessor model.
Compared to the Spotter 60, the magnification range of the Spotter 42 starts at six times instead of twenty times. This makes the Spotter 42 well suited for use with night vision and thermal imaging attachments (NSV and IRV). This is accompanied by a significant improvement in observation capability in restricted visibility conditions.
“The optical performance of the Spotter 42 is outstanding. With its large field of view, high edge-to-edge sharpness and brilliant image quality over the entire magnification range of 6-42x, it represents a milestone in the compact observation optics device category,” explained the responsible Sales Manager Josef Reif.
In general, the observation optics have become more compact thanks to a modified optical concept. The result is a high magnification range with low initial magnification and a simultaneous reduction in weight. The Spotter 42 complies with Bundeswehr specifications and has continuously adjustable reticle illumination as well as an integrated laser filter that compensates for the magnification-related increase in the radiance of harmful laser radiation without significantly impairing the visual transmission values.
Thanks to the long mounting rail with Picatinny profile on both sides included in the accessories, attachments of different heights can be used. Additional mounting rails on the device allow the attachment of various additional devices such as target pointers or rangefinders. With its additional capabilities for observation in restricted visibility, the Spotter 42 increases the night combat capability of snipers. According to the company, it will receive further functional enhancements in the future.
