The two German companies Hensoldt and Quantum Systems announced a strategic cooperation in the field of Software-Defined Defense (SDD) at the beginning of May. The aim is to combine Hensoldt’s expertise in sensor data fusion, sensor resource and data management with Quantum Systems’ modern unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and software stack.

The companies want to jointly accelerate the development and deployment of interoperable, cross-domain defense capabilities. According to a press release, the initial activities will focus on the integration of Quantum Systems’ solutions and Hensoldt’s Ceretron software framework. The future project “Future Combat Air System” (FCAS) will also be supported by strengthening the networked sensor technology, which is of central importance for the NSDAS architecture (Networked and distributed Sensors, Defensive aids and Attack Systems).

“The collaboration with Quantum Systems holds enormous potential for the future of software-defined defense. Their innovative mission software and UAV platforms in combination with Hensoldt’s data fusion and sensor systems form a powerful synergy,” Hensoldt CEO Oliver Dörre is convinced. “This strategic partnership also underlines Hensoldt’s commitment as a ‘bridge builder’, connecting established players in the defense sector with agile next-generation start-ups to accelerate innovation and strengthen Europe’s technological sovereignty.”

Another advantage of the cooperation is “joint international business development efforts”, as the press release continues. For example, “joint offerings for border surveillance, ISR missions and rapid technology demonstrations based on existing and future UAV platforms” are seen as possibilities.
