Denmark is trying to resolve the diplomatic crisis with the USA surrounding President Donald Trump’s demand to buy Greenland (-> What does Donald Trump want with Greenland?), while at the same time seeking the support of other European countries. In any case, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is now open to an increased US presence in Greenland.

“I fully agree with the Americans that the High North and the Arctic are becoming increasingly important in matters of defense, security and deterrence. It is possible to find a solution to ensure an increased US presence in Greenland,” Frederiksen explained.

She emphasized that both Denmark and NATO want to expand their presence in the region. Denmark is planning to investments of around two billion euros in defense. At the same time, however, she made it clear: “Greenland is not for sale.”

Frederiksen also emphasized the need for joint security measures and expressed confidence that a balanced approach could be found: “When it comes to securing our part of the world, we can find a solution.”
