On December 16, the first NH-90 MRFH Sea Tiger helicopter will be handed over to the German Navy in a ceremony in Berlin. German Navy navy. The handover by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and naval inspector Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack marks a technological milestone: with the Sea Tiger, the navy receives a new core system for modern submarine hunting and naval warfare from the air.
The Sea Tiger was specially developed for the requirements of national and alliance defense. In future, a total of 30 helicopters will be stationed at Naval Air Wing 5 in Nordholz, Lower Saxony.
“The Sea Tiger enables us to conduct modern naval warfare to combat underwater and surface threats from the air,” emphasizes Kaack. The aircraft combines highly developed avionics with precise sensor technology and powerful weapons, including torpedoes and modern anti-ship missiles. As the “flying eye” of the fleet, it is intended to provide a high-resolution picture of the situation above and below the water, strengthening reconnaissance, deterrence and battle management in equal measure.
Compared to the NH-90 NTH Sea Lion, the Sea Tiger also has a diving sonar and a modern sonar buoy system, which enable far-reaching and precise underwater reconnaissance. In addition, electro-optical sensors and camera systems ensure improved target detection and maritime surveillance.
Together with the new P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft the Sea Tiger will make a significant contribution to an expanded maritime situation picture in the future – especially against the backdrop of increasing submarine activity and growing threats to critical maritime infrastructure.
The new on-board helicopter is gradually replacing the ageing Sea Lynx Mk88A, which has been in service since 1981 and formed the backbone of German anti-submarine warfare for decades.
