After the initial assessment of the situation and a reconnaissance of the terrain, the participants of the 22nd General Staff Training conducted a tactical war game as part of the ongoing tactical training in order to carefully review the planning results to date.
In the war game, a tactical starting position is assumed, the combat and support units are placed on the map and the course of the battle is played out in “fast motion”. The course of the war game follows a strict set of rules. Each tactical action by one party is followed by a reaction from the opponent on the playing field.
Ultimately, the course of the battle becomes apparent and the correct and necessary conclusions can be drawn. Digital aids are not always required for this. Simple and proven tools can also be used. The war game was developed in Prussia in the 19th century. Officers used it to train strategic, operational and tactical thinking using game plans and clearly defined rules. https://militaeraktuell.at/die-taktikausbildung-der-zukuenftigen-generalstabsoffiziere/
