After almost two years, the 22nd General Staff Training Unit is now in the final spurt of training. A visit to various EU and NATO institutions as well as the Royal Military Academy of the Belgian Armed Forces served to deepen the theoretical training content.
In addition to the NATO headquarters and the Supreme Headquarters of Allied Power in Europe (SHAPE), the Austrian military representation in Brussels organized numerous interesting lectures and tours. In a discussion with Ambassador Elisabeth Kornfeind, who is also Austria’s Permanent Representative to NATO, and the Head of the Military Representation in Brussels, Lieutenant General Franz Leitgeb, Austria’s future security policy orientation was debated. In another presentation, Ambassador Nikolaus Marschik provided interesting insights into the work of Austria’s Permanent Representation to the EU. The EU Parliament was also visited by the course participants and numerous discussions were held with high-ranking parliamentarians on European foreign and security policy. https://militaeraktuell.at/generalstabsausbildung-stabilisierung-und-urbanes-umfeld/ The trip concluded with a military-historical appreciation of Waterloo, which was combined with an exciting guided tour and briefing on Napoleon’s decisive defeat and the course of the battle. The trip to Brussels is therefore an indispensable part of the strategic training of future general staff officers.
