General Dynamics European Land Systems has signed a contract to supply up to 227 Piranha 5 highly protected wheeled vehicles in six different configurations to the Romanian Armed Forces.
The contract has a total value of around one billion euros and is part of the Romanian army’s plan to modernize its fleet of protected wheeled vehicles. Prime Minister Mihai Tudose and Deputy Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu attended the signing ceremony at the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense. The state-of-the-art vehicles will be produced locally in Romania as part of a strategic cooperation and technology transfer between General Dynamics European Land Systems – Mowag and the Romanian company Uzina Mecanică București București (UMB).
Protected wheeled vehicles from the Piranha family have been in successful service with the Romanian armed forces since 2006 and have proven their reliability and performance in various operations at home and abroad. “The Romanian army is one of the most important Piranha users in Europe. We are proud and very pleased about this order, as it documents the high level of trust and satisfaction of the Romanian army with our vehicles,” emphasized Oliver Dürr, Vice President Wheeled Vehicles and Managing Director of General Dynamics European Land Systems-Mowag. “With this step, we are relying on a sustainable and trusting cooperation with a strong industrial partner in Romania,” said Thomas Kauffmann, Vice President International Business & Services of General Dynamics European Land Systems, emphasizing the importance of this order and adding: “The technology transfer and local production of these vehicles represent an enormous opportunity for the Romanian industry.”
