General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) is part of the modernization of the German Armed Forces has been commissioned with a major project to set up the vehicle-based, long-range telecommunications network “Tactical Wide Area Network” (TaWAN). The project involves the delivery of up to 256 Piranha vehicles, of which 58 will be delivered in the first batch. Delivery of the first series vehicles is already planned for 2026.
GDELS is working together with Rheinmetall on this project. was recently awarded the overall project by the Bundeswehr.
As part of the project, the Piranha 5 will be equipped with a 15-metre telescopic mast and radio relay system and will serve as a highly mobile, armored data hub in the TaWAN network. A similar vehicle variant for long-range communication, the Piranha 3 Kompak, has already been successfully in service with the Swiss Army in service for years.
In order to ensure immediate technical and logistical operational readiness, GDELS will set up a system support center at the Neubrandenburg site.
