A total of three systems were ordered, each consisting of several bridge pontoons, new push boats from the US manufacturer Birdon and a mid-life upgrade (MLU) of the existing bridge adapter pallets for the transport vehicles by the company Hiab.

The IRB replaces the aging pontoon bridges of the Royal Dutch Army. All NATOvehicles, including the heaviest battle tanks, can use the bridge system. https://militaeraktuell.at/neue-schutzausruestung-fuer-das-bundesheer/ Another decisive advantage is the full interoperability with the IRBs of other user countries, including the USA, Germany and Sweden. Using a coupling adapter, the IRB can also be connected to the widespread M3 amphibious bridge and ferry system, which is used by Germany, the UK, Latvia and Sweden, among others. Sweden had only recently received the first M3 system of the latest generation.
