On Friday, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner officially handed over two new buildings at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt to the users. The campus of the Theresian Military Academy was extended by a new accommodation building in modular timber construction and a multifunctional service building in solid construction. In total, the Austrian Armed Forces invested 45.6 million euros in the structural development of the Theresian Military Academy.

“With today’s handover, we are setting a strong accent for the future of the Armed Forcesmodern infrastructure, sustainable construction and optimal framework conditions for training and deployment. This investment is a clear commitment to the security of our country and to providing the best possible support for our soldiers. I would like to thank all those involved in this major construction project,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.

The newly constructed accommodation building was mainly built in industrial series production using modern modular timber construction. A total of 103 modules for two people each, 12 single modules and two barrier-free modules for one person each were built. The rooms are complemented by a centrally located reception unit with adjoining rooms.

The building offers space for a total of 220 people and has a gross floor area of 7,711.63 square meters. A particular focus was placed on sustainability, with a photovoltaic system covering an area of 1,038 square meters being installed on the roof. The construction costs for the accommodation building amounted to around 29.5 million euros.

The service building was constructed using conventional solid construction methods and is functionally designed to cater for the Burg (Theresian Military Academy) and Daun Barracks (Federal Commercial Academy for Leadership and Security) properties. The central catering facility is designed for a daily catering capacity of over 600 people and, in addition to the dining hall and kitchen, also includes all the necessary ancillary rooms. The building also houses the garrison’s central clothing and equipment store.

The building is complemented by several specialist workshops, such as a saddlery, tailoring, shoemaking and carpentry, with a total area of around 360 square meters. The gross floor area of the building is 3,935.65 square meters. A photovoltaic system was also installed here, which contributes to a sustainable energy supply with an area of 1,284 square meters. The construction costs amounted to around 16.1 million euros.

Both buildings were realized as part of an open, EU-wide tendering process. Planning began in 2021 and, following approval from the building authorities in November 2022, construction began in June 2023, with completion and furnishing scheduled for spring 2025.
