On June 3, the Latvian Ministry of Defense and the German armaments company Eurospike signed a contract for the delivery of Spike anti-tank missile systems, ammunition and other equipment with a total value of 81 million euros.
“The Spike systems have impressively demonstrated their operational capability and fully meet the operational requirements of our armed forces,” explained Defense Minister Andris Sprūds. “To strengthen the combat capability of our regular units and the National Guard, we are procuring additional systems that will supplement our existing stocks.” Delivery of the new systems is planned from 2028.

A central component of the contract is the 30% involvement of Latvian industry. In accordance with the national strategy to promote the defense industry and innovation, the long-term development of the Latvian defense industry is to be supported through local value creation and security of supply.
The Spike family developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems in Israel is one of the most advanced anti-tank weapons in the world. It comprises fourth- and fifth-generation electro-optical guided weapons that can engage a wide variety of armored targets – including modern main battle tanks – with high precision.

A unique technological feature is the integrated data link system, which enables continuous communication between the missile and the launcher during the mission. This allows the missile to be controlled in a targeted manner even after launch – and the operators remain concealed and out of the enemy’s range.
Latvia signed its first contract with Eurospike back in 2018. This laid the foundation for the close cooperation between the company and the Latvian defence industry that continues to this day.
