Rare guests at Klagenfurt Airport: On December 31, 2025, a total of three Austrian Air Force Eurofighters moved from their home and operational base at Hinterstoisser Air Base in Zeltweg to Carinthia.
From there, the aircraft will provide active airspace surveillance up to and including January 6, followed by a return to Zeltweg on January 7. As Air Chief Major General Gerfried Promberger (-> Air Chief Major General Gerfried Promberger as a guest on the Militär Aktuell podcast), this is a regular measure within the framework of Austrian airspace security. “The Eurofighters take off on ‘priority alpha’ missions, for example in the event of radio problems, unauthorized overflights or violations of the air sovereignty of the Republic of Austria,” said the commander of the Austrian Air Force.
In addition to the exercise character, the measure also serves to relieve the personnel situation at the Hinterstoisser airbase in Zeltweg. In the past, the Austrian Armed Forces had already temporarily relocated Eurofighters from Zeltweg to Klagenfurt or to Linz-Hörsching Air Base in order to ensure decentralized airspace surveillance.
