Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) are beginning the technological modernization of the A-29 Super Tucano fleet. According to statements made at the 54th Paris Air Show International, the model used for training, interception and surveillance missions is to undergo a mid-life upgrade (MLU).
“The FAB will be able to count on an extensive list of upgrades that have already been carried out throughout the aircraft’s life cycle, which have kept the platform technologically up-to-date without compromising its low cost of ownership,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security. “And should FAB studies identify the need for new features and capabilities not yet developed, Embraer can develop and implement them upon request.” “Since its entry into service in the Brazilian Air Force, the A-29 has performed the various tasks for which it has been used with flying colors. The proposed upgrade should allow the Air Force to maintain the modern platform and extend the operational capabilities of this versatile and highly reliable aircraft for many years to come,” said Air Force Commander, Brigadier General Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno.
Examples of modernizations and developments already carried out that could benefit the FAB include the fifth-generation avionics system with expansion options, the navigation and communication systems, the expansion of the armament, the aircraft’s surveillance and self-protection sensors and the increase in situational awareness through improvements to the human-machine interface. The FAB currently has a fleet of 60 A-29 aircraft, which are deployed in five different squadrons and have completed more than 325,000 flight hours. With more than 260 units delivered worldwide, the aircraft has been selected by more than 15 air forces, including the United States Air Force (USAF). https://militaeraktuell.at/daenische-home-guard-setzt-auf-airborne-linx/ In addition to combat missions, the aircraft is also frequently used as a modern training aircraft. Its ability to simulate combat missions and upload and download flight data have made it an extremely effective training platform. As a true multi-mission aircraft, the A-29 is flexible enough to provide air forces with a single platform for light attack, armed reconnaissance, close air support and advanced training to optimize their fleets. It is equipped with a variety of state-of-the-art sensors and weapons, including an electro-optical/infrared system with laser sighting, night vision and secure voice and data communications.
