The Dutch armed forces protect the logistics hub for supporting Ukraine with two Patriot air defense systems, a NASAMS system, counter-drone systems and 300 soldiers. From this hub in Poland, military material from NATO-countries is transported to Ukraine from this hub in Poland. The Netherlands will secure this hub as part of the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) until June 1, 2026.

“The Netherlands is providing advanced capabilities for multi-layered air defense. In this way, we are protecting logistical supplies to Ukraine, defending NATO’s eastern flank and also improving our own operational capability,” explained Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans. “After all, this is one of the first times that we have deployed this combination of systems simultaneously. We are showing Russia that it makes no sense to attack this hub. This strengthens the security of Poland, Ukraine, NATO and the Netherlands.”

Multi-layered air defense

The Dutch contribution is based on an integrated unit consisting of three different capabilities. In addition to the two Patriots, this includes a NASAMS air defense system and anti-drone systems. Together with its partners, the Netherlands is thus providing a multi-layered air defense to offer protection against potential threats from ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, fighter aircraft, helicopters and drones.

The NATO countries take turns protecting the logistics center at regular intervals. Before the deployment of the Dutch armed forces, this task was the responsibility of the German Bundeswehr. It has not yet been decided which country will take over after the Netherlands from June 1 of next year.

The Netherlands had already previously protected Polish airspace with the deployment of F-35 fighter jets. Together with Norwegian allies they secured NATO airspace from September 1 to December 1. The mission served both to deter Russia and to protect the transportation of military equipment for Ukraine. However, this F35 contingent is now being withdrawn.

NSATU

The NSATU coordinates and facilitates the training of Ukrainian soldiers and provides military support to the country. One of the objectives is to ensure that the military equipment donated to Ukraine by NATO countries is delivered safely to its destination. Dutch air defense enables the NSATU to carry out these logistical activities safely.
