The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has developed the Bundeswehr at Diehl Defense six Iris-T SLM (Infra Red Imaging System – Surface Launched Medium Range) weapon systems for the Bundeswehr. The budget committee of the German Bundestag approved the project last week and the contract was signed today.
A key tactical advantage of the new system is that both main components of the air defense system (launchers and radar) can be remotely controlled from a common command post and operated with minimal manpower. It is also characterized by rapid deployability and the ability to engage multiple targets. The Iris-T SLM fire units can be integrated into the NATO air defense network. https://militaeraktuell.at/deutsche-eurofighter-erhalten-arexis-system-von-saab/ Iris-T SLM is designed to defend against fighter jets, helicopters, cruise missiles and air-to-ground missiles as part of medium-range ground-based air defense. The range of targets also includes larger drones. Each fire unit consists of a medium-range radar with a detection range of up to 250 kilometers and three launchers, each with eight guided missiles with a range of 40 kilometers. The systems are each supplemented by a reloading vehicle, two logistics containers and workshop equipment. According to current planning, the first system is to be delivered for qualification purposes as early as the third quarter of 2024 and handed over to the air force as the future user from mid-2025.
