The Bundeswehr is to receive new short-range Iris-T guided missiles to replace material delivered to Ukraine. The order is part of a framework agreement concluded today between the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) and the manufacturer Diehl Defense.

In addition to the missiles for deployment, it also includes missiles for test purposes and training equipment. The Bundestag Budget Committee had previously approved the project. The procurement of the almost three-metre-long guided missiles will be financed from the upgrading budget in Section 60. https://militaeraktuell.at/bundesheer-kauft-weitere-hx-lkw-bei-rmmv/ The short-range Iris-T guided missile, which stands for “Infra Red Imaging System Tail”, was developed multinationally under German leadership and has been in service with the Bundeswehr since 2005. It is the standard armament for the Eurofighter and Tornado short-range fighter aircraft. The guided missile has an infrared seeker that can distinguish between the target’s heat source and infrared decoys. In addition to being used by fighter aircraft, it can also be fired from ground vehicles following a software adaptation. Ukraine has been using it in this capacity in its war against Russia since this year. The first fixed-wing missiles are to be delivered in 2026; the framework agreement runs until 2030.
