On yesterday’s UN World Day of Peace, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner reminded us once again: “You don’t get peace and freedom for free, you have to be able to protect and defend both.”
Defense Minister Tanner continued: “The Austrian Armed Forces has been making indispensable contributions to peacekeeping for decades. It is important that it has the necessary resources and good equipment for this. The ‘Mission Forward’ and the ‘Reconstruction Plan 2032+’ ensure that this equipment – after many years of savings in the army – is now being rebuilt. The implementation of the Sky Shield missile defense shield (-> Austria has joined the Sky Shield Initiative), the development of protection against drones and the intensive fight against cyber attacks are among the most important measures. We can see that the threats are increasing in a very difficult geopolitical situation. This makes it all the more important to make every effort to maintain and secure peace.”
Tanner (-> Interview with Militär Aktuell) also recalled the numerous deployments of the Austrian Armed Forces in UN peacekeeping missions on the UN World Day of Peace. “Austria has always made a major contribution to securing peace and will continue to do so in the future. Austrian UN soldiers enjoy an excellent reputation worldwide and are held in high esteem.”
“No effort to achieve and maintain peace is in vain, no matter how small,” concluded the Austrian Defense Minister.
