The National Guard of the Republic of Cyprus procures 40 additional Mistral anti-aircraft missiles from the French manufacturer MBDA. The corresponding agreement between Cyprus and France has now been according to a report by Defence Redefined at the international trade fair for defense and security, DEFEA 2025, in Athens.

Panagiotis Symeou, Director of Armaments in the Ministry of Defense, signed on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus. France was represented by the National Armaments Director, Lieutenant General Gaël Diaz de Tuesta.

During the signing ceremony, both sides reaffirmed the close security and defense cooperation between Cyprus and France. They also expressed their intention to further intensify cooperation in the area of European armaments projects.

The procurement of the new Mistral missiles from the French defense company MBDA is based on a framework agreement signed in June 2024. This was concluded at the Eurosatory arms fair in Paris by Cyprus, France, Estonia, Hungary and Belgium for the joint procurement of the Mistral 3 ground-based air defense system.

The Cypriot National Guard has been using Mistral systems with twin starters for over three decades. Specifically, both the Atlas twin starter mounted on Pinzgauer 6×6 vehicles and the Simbad sea target starter are used. The latter is installed on the offshore patrol vessel “Commodore Ioannides” and the support ship “Alasia”.
