On the Bemowo Piskie military training area in north-eastern Poland, the US “Dragoon” task force has been conducting a combat firing exercise since April 15. It is the highlight of the “Saber Strike” exercise. During the exercise, Jäger Battalion 1 of the German Armed Forces the 2nd Cavalry Regiment of the US Army. Around 800 German soldiers with more than 200 vehicles are practising together with their allied partners. The multinational task force also includes Dutch reconnaissance units as well as Spanish and Italian units.

“The international nature of this exercise is an impressive example of what NATO actually means. As a commander, I am led by an American regiment commander as if I were one of his regular American battalion commanders. There is no difference,” emphasizes Lieutenant Colonel Sebastian Hagen, commander of Jäger Battalion 1 and leader of the combat unit. After completing the combat shooting, the combat unit will march on to Lithuania. From there, the return march to the home bases by plane, ship and rail will begin once the exercise is complete. All participants are expected to be back home by the end of May. https://militaeraktuell.at/lockheed-martin-baut-neue-us-raketenabwehrflugkoerper/ In addition to marching and combat training, “Saber Strike” demonstrates the operational readiness of medium forces for national and alliance defense. These are fast-moving and can reach potential deployment areas over long distances within a short time. “Saber Strike” is part of the NATO large-scale maneuver “Steadfast Defender 24”. With its participation, Germany is sending a signal of solidarity and defense readiness to the allied nations in Eastern Europe. The German part in Saber Strike is part of the “Quadriga 2024” exercise series. This involves the Bundeswehr combining several large-scale exercises to deploy troops in Germany and abroad. It combines these with exercises by its allies over a period of five months. More than 12,000 soldiers are involved.
