The Saxony-Anhalt State Command has a new commander: Colonel Thorsten Alme took over command from Colonel Bernd Albers. The ceremony, including the symbolic handover of the troop flag, took place in the State Chancellery of Saxony-Anhalt and was also attended by Minister President Reiner Haseloff. In future, Colonel Albers will serve as Commander of the US/Canada Armed Forces Command in Reston, Virginia.
“Our armed forces are indispensable for the freedom and security of our country. This applies today more than ever. The Bundeswehr belongs to Germany and Saxony-Anhalt. The citizen in uniform is not an abstract concept. The members of the Bundeswehr come from our midst. We are grateful to the soldiers for their service. They deserve our appreciation,” said Haseloff, paying particular tribute to the importance of the Bundeswehr. With regard to Colonel Albers, he continued: “You are characterized by your leadership and decisiveness. In his closing speech, he emphasized the importance of cooperation: “Together with our partners from the blue light organizations and civilian rescue and relief services, we stood side by side to master every challenge professionally. The past few years have shown that the success of a command is never the merit of just one person, but is based on the joint efforts of everyone.” Colonel Thorsten Alme will now take over command. He joined the Bundeswehr in 1986 with Panzer Battalion 23 in Braunschweig. Prior to his current position, he was Head of Strategy, Projects and Information Work at the Territorial Command of the Bundeswehr in Berlin. Minister President Haseloff wished Colonel Alme every success: “You are facing new duties, great challenges and opportunities. You are taking over command at a difficult time, not only for our country. You are excellently qualified for your new tasks. With you, the Saxony-Anhalt State Command will also be in good hands in the future.”
In conclusion, Colonel Thorsten Alme also spoke briefly and emphasized that he would do everything in his power to ensure a successful time at the Saxony-Anhalt State Command: “I am looking forward to my time as Commander of the State Command and will devote all my energy to my new tasks here in Saxony-Anhalt.”
