On Wednesday, Colonel Stefan Koroknai, long-time commander of the Jägerbataillon Wien 1 “Hoch- und Deutschmeister” and dedicated militia soldier, was awarded the Silver Medal of Honor for Services to the State of Vienna at Vienna City Hall.
In his speech on behalf of the Mayor of Vienna, Member of Parliament Marcus Schober, himself a first lieutenant in the militia of the Austrian Armed Forcesemphasized the outstanding contribution of the honoree “as inseparably linked to the commitment to the protection of our federal capital Vienna” and also recalled numerous exercises or missions of the Jägerbataillon Vienna 1 under the command of Colonel Koroknai, for example during the Covid 19 pandemic (-> News about the Covid-19 deployment of the Austrian Armed Forces).
Colonel Stefan Koroknai joined the Austrian Armed Forces as a one-year volunteer on October 1, 1987 and was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1991. After his basic military service and militia officer training, he served in various militia functions in what was then Jäger Battalion 6, most recently as operations commander.
He has been deputy commander of Jägerbataillon Wien 1 “Hoch- und Deutschmeister” since its formation in 2006 and has been commander of this Viennese militia battalion since April 13, 2016. After completing his studies in technical mathematics, Koroknai’s civilian job is in IT management, currently at Agrarmarkt Austria.
The Jägerbataillon Wien 1 “Hoch- und Deutschmeister” is one of the two Viennese militia battalions and was formed in 2006 from the two Jägerbataillons 4 and 6 of the former Jägerregiment Wien. It thus continues the tradition of the Viennese house regiment of the “Hoch- und Deutschmeister”. This tradition can be traced back to the founding of the first Deutschmeister regiment in 1696. The soldiers of the Jäger Battalion Vienna 1, who almost exclusively belong to the militia rank, master the classic tasks of a Jäger battalion such as attack, defense, delaying action or the protection of important buildings and facilities.
