Stay at home and still visit the museum? The various online platforms of the Museum of Military History/Militärhistorisches Institut offer comprehensive digital access to the museum’s educational, collection, exhibition and research activities.
Anyone who would like to take a walk through the museum can do so virtually: The “360° degree tour” leads through the exhibitions to the objects that represent over 400 years of Austrian military history. The latest offering is the “Virtual Hall of Fame”. It is a desktop application that allows visitors to explore the 150-year-old frescoes by Carl Blaas up close at the click of a mouse. And anyone who wants to browse through the museum’s depots and archives can do so in the “online catalog”. There are currently 52,374 objects available there, including oil paintings, sketches, drawings, photos, sculptures and historical guns and firearms. The HGM YouTube channel also features 25 videos on special museum objects, panel discussions and cultural education topics, while the HGM Twitter channel, the HGM Instagram page and the HGM Facebook page also feature articles on (military) history, museum objects and photos from its archive.
