The ongoing modernization of the Bundeswehr’s vehicle fleet Bundeswehr does not stop at the most well-known and proven workhorse: in mid-2024, it was contractually agreed that the ageing Wolf light truck would be replaced by a modern vehicle specially designed for military applications. In July, the Bundeswehr Procurement Office also concluded a corresponding framework agreement, from which up to 5,800 light trucks can be procured by the end of 2032. The first batch of the framework agreement will be completed with the order for an additional 300 vehicles that has now been placed.

Due to the volume of the order, the order was approved yesterday and 37 other planned major projects were approved by the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag yesterday.

The successor model, called Wolf 2, is also capable of off-road use and is designed to transport up to four soldiers with complete personal equipment and weapons in the command vehicle and military police vehicle variants. The functional equipment with modern command and control equipment was considered right from the start. For this reason, the vehicles are already prepared to accommodate the D-LBO radio and command equipment on delivery (-> BWI GmbH equips the Bundeswehr with D-LBO). As in the case of the Rheinmetall airborne platform project (-> Germany and the Netherlands order Caracal airborne platform), the Wolf 2 will also be based on the Mercedes G-Class (model 464) produced in Graz, the Bundeswehr expects “synergy effects and advantages in terms of training and logistics”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUKjGSQ4Zmk&t=163s
