A few days ago, the Bundeswehr put a new central organization into service at the air force base in Cologne-Wahn: the Continuing Airworthiness Management Organization of the Bundeswehr (CAMOBw). In future, it will be responsible for the safe technical operation of all military aircraft – from transport aircraft to fighter planes and helicopters.
CAMOBw relies on uniform technical standards that are based on the European Military Airworthiness Requirements (EMAR). Germany implements these requirements nationally as the German Military Airworthiness Requirements (DEMAR). Uniform rules are particularly crucial for international projects such as the A400M or the joint C-130J formation with France – both for maintenance and for safety and interoperability.

For the first time, the Bundeswehr is thus bundling the responsibilities previously divided between the Air Force, Army, Navy and BAAINBw. The new organization has 512 posts and works across all branches of the armed forces. Personnel from all areas contribute their expertise – visibly symbolized by the colour coding of the internal areas. The head is Brigadier General Uwe Angermeyer, previously head of the development staff.
The transition will take place in stages: CAMOBw took over the technical operation of the Air Force on August 1, followed by the Army from September 1 and the Navy by 2030 at the latest. The basis for the approval is a jointly developed operations manual, initially focusing on the A400M.
