On June 18, 447 officer cadets received their diplomas at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich were promoted to lieutenant or lieutenant at sea by Nils Hilmer, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg).

The President of the Bundeswehr University Munich, Eva-Maria Kern, gave the officer candidates important messages in her speech. “As citizens in uniform, you play an important role in our society,” said the President, because: “The Bundeswehr is an integral part of our society. As young officer cadets, you play an important role in this. You not only take on military tasks, but also act as bridge builders between the civilian and military worlds. Never stop learning – stay open to new perspectives and think outside the box.”

In his speech, Nils Hilmer, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Defence, emphasized the special role of the officer candidates promoted this year: “Many of you began your service in the Bundeswehr immediately after Russia’s attack on Ukraine in violation of international law – at a time full of uncertainty and new realities. A time in which a decision to commit to the defense of our country carries a very special weight.” Freedom is not a gift and must be defended, said the State Secretary.

Special highlights during the celebrations were the flyover of an A400M and two Eurofighters.
