The traditional horse pilgrimage from the Hochfilzen military training area to the Maria Kirchental pilgrimage church takes place on June 6th. The pilgrimage organized by the Austrian Armed Forces has long been an integral part of regional customs and is open to both military and civilian participants.

A spiritual awakening at dawn

The day starts early: at 6.00 a.m., riders and pilgrims gather at the Barbara Chapel in Hochfilzen for a joint prayer and the official announcement. At 6.15 a.m., the pilgrimage group sets off – on horseback or on foot – over the scenic Römersattel to the Vorderkaserklamm gorge and on towards Maria Kirchental.

At around 9.30 a.m., a rest stop is planned at the Vorderkaserklamm inn before the group finally arrives at 12.00 p.m. for the solemn field mass in front of the baroque pilgrimage church in Kirchental. The mass will be organized by the Catholic military chaplaincy together with the Salzburg Military Band.

Participation is open to all interested parties, registration is not required. Participants must provide their own catering and return journey.
