Today, a commemorative ceremony was held to mark the annexation of Austria by the National Socialist German Reich in March 1938. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner, in the presence of the Chief of the General Staff of the Austrian Armed ForcesGeneral Rudolf Striedinger, laid a wreath in the consecration room of the Outer Castle Gate in front of the Austrian Heroes’ Monument.

The commemorative ceremony was traditionally accompanied by a guard formation of honor, delegations from the Federal Ministry of Defence and the guard music.

“Remembrance reminds us to remain vigilant – the commemoration of the annexation of Austria in 1938 is a sign of our responsibility for the future. Only by preserving history can we prevent the mistakes of the past from being repeated. Freedom and democracy cannot be taken for granted – they must always be defended and protected,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.
