The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) reached a significant milestone in November: For the first time, Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM) meteor missiles from MBDA with the new multi-role combat aircraft Saab Gripen E multi-role combat aircraft – and both missiles hit their targets accurately at long range.
The shots were fired as part of the large-scale “BVR-X” exercise at Natal Air Force Base. Four Gripen E aircraft were involved – for the first time, FAB pilots and technical teams used the Meteor under realistic combat conditions. The exercise was carried out by the 1st Air Defense Regiment (1º GDA).
“The ‘BVR-X’ exercise was a decisive step in expanding the capabilities of the F-39E Gripen. The combination of Gripen and Meteor projects Brazilian combat power and strengthens the necessary deterrent. With modern sensors, mission systems and electronic warfare – coupled with a guided missile that is virtually impossible to evade – Brazil now has a clear advantage in air combat,” emphasized Major General Breno Diogenes Gonçalves, commander of the Natal base.
Saab and MBDA also praised the success. “Gripen and Meteor elevate Brazil to an exclusive circle of countries with access to this technology,” said Peter Dölling, Managing Director of Saab Brazil. For MBDA, the Meteor once again underlines the strength of European cooperation: “The missile is a game changer – and we are proud that Brazil now has this capability,” said Ricardo Mantovani, VP Export Sales Americas.
The Meteor is considered one of the world’s most powerful air-to-air weapon systems. Its ramjet engine delivers thrust right up to the target, creating an exceptionally large no-escape zone. Thanks to its high terminal phase maneuverability and fragmentation warhead, it can engage a wide range of targets day and night, in any weather and even in intense electronic warfare.
For the exercise, the FAB was supported by Saab, MBDA and other agencies. Two maneuverable Mirach 100/5 drones were used as targets, simulating the speed and altitude of modern fighter aircraft.
