Host and main sponsor Leonardo presented a simulator with the new Block 20 cockpit configuration of the M-346FA light combat aircraft variant at the Military Flight Training (MFT) event organized by Defence IQ in Sardinia – the version of the model that is expected to be used by the Austrian Armed Forces will also be used by the Austrian Armed Forces.
The upgrade package currently under development was presented at the Farnborough Airshow in July 2024 and Militär Aktuell explained in detail at the time by Leonardo manager Dario Marfé.
For the presentation at MFT2025 in front of an international audience of experts, the following is now available:
“The improved M-346 Block-20 cockpit from Leonardo sets new standards in pilot training. The modern human-machine interface (HMI) with a large display is based on the operating logic of future fighter aircraft – it increases situational awareness, reduces the workload and shortens the time to operational readiness.”
He continues: “Designed for adaptive training and fully compatible with LVC (Live, Virtual, Constructive) scenarios, it enables a next-generation immersive training experience – tailored to increasing mission complexity and pilot capabilities. The Block 20 configuration will also include new digital features and AI-based assistance systems to ensure the M-346 remains a top performer in future operational scenarios.”

What the developments of the FA version version, the focus is on two technological upgrades in particular:
- First and foremost, an AESA radar (Active Electronically Scanned Array), which not only improves targeting accuracy, but also enables a broader range of applications for air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.
- The FA variant also has a new Weapon System Interface Unit, which makes it easier to connect and manage different weapon systems. This not only facilitates the integration of additional air-to-air and air-to-ground weaponry, but also significantly increases operational flexibility.
Improvements also relevant for Austria
On December 28 of the previous year, the Austrian Armed Forces took the decision to procure twelve M-346FA and signed a corresponding G2G agreement with Italy.
For manufacturer Leonardo, this meant that instead of the 20 machines originally planned – including including for the Frecce Tricolori – production planning could now be extended to 32 aircraft.

In the current contract negotiations between the aircraft department of Directorate 5 – Procurement (LZA) and the Italian authorities, which are expected to be concluded by the summer, the Block 20 configuration was also included in the performance requirements.
As was reported at the MFT2025 in Sardinia, the integration of the Block 20 cockpit into series production is expected to start around mid-2027 – with deliveries by the end of 2028.
A binding delivery or payment plan from the Austrian side is not yet available, but both are classified as budget-relevant. From 2032, a replacement for the Austrian Armed Forces’ current Eurofighter fleet is also due to arrive and, given the tight timelines, it could also become increasingly challenging for the comparatively small force in terms of personnel.
