The US Navy (-> current news about the US Armed Forces) has Lockheed Martin a contract worth around one billion euros for the further development of the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) hypersonic missile system.

According to the US Department of Defense, the contract also includes the development and production of the necessary logistical equipment and missiles for the future launch platforms – and should significantly strengthen the Navy’s capabilities in the coming years. Completion is scheduled for the end of August 2028.

The CPS system is a conventional (non-nuclear) hypersonic weapon that is to be deployed on Zumwalt-class destroyers and Virginia-class submarines. Four launch systems are planned on each of the Zumwalt ships, each designed for three missiles.

Technically, the system consists of a two-stage solid-fuel booster that releases a hypersonic glide vehicle with a warhead in flight. It is designed for precise strikes against particularly valuable strategic targets. This is likely to be of crucial importance to the US Navy, particularly with regard to the Indo-Pacific, where the focus is increasingly on defending against Chinese aircraft carrier battle groups.
