Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has BAE Systems a contract worth €9.6 million to integrate the Combined Interrogator Transponder (CIT) AN/APX-127(V)1 into the KF-21 Boramae aircraft. The latest Interrogator Friend or Foe (IFF) system enables enhanced decision-making capabilities to distinguish between allied forces and potential threats in contested scenarios. The KF-21 CIT units are scheduled to be delivered to KAI for integration and certification this year.

Developed for tactical aircraft, the CIT design ensures continued versatility to meet current and future mission requirements and support soldiers in the evolving war zone. Its open system architecture enables software upgrades, reducing the risk and cost associated with hardware modifications. It offers advanced multi-function capabilities and supports the latest encryption, jamming resistance and cyber security requirements.

“The APX-127 combined interrogator transponder will provide the KF-21 aircraft with state-of-the-art IFF technology, helping to strengthen the Republic of Korea’s national defense strategy,” said Seth Guanu, program director for Combat Identification Products at BAE Systems. “This new system will give fifth-generation fighter pilots an advantage in air superiority missions and enable them to maintain interoperability with the U.S. and its coalition partners.”

With the same form factor, the AN/APX-127(V)1 is a direct replacement for the AN/APX-126(V) CIT currently used in the KF-21. It is Mark XIIB IFF certified with Mode S and Mode 5 for secure and encrypted data exchange. The enhanced system increases situational awareness for soldiers by providing additional receive channels for Mode 5 Level 2 passive detection and Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast In to detect and identify friendly aircraft in complex environments.
