In the Govan shipyard of BAE Systems in Glasgow, the first steel was recently cut for the fifth of eight Type 26 City Class warships, the “HMS Sheffield”. According to the company, the ceremony, which also marks the official start of construction, is “an important milestone for the program and for British shipbuilding”. The Minister for Defense Procurement and Industry, Maria Eagle, attended the ceremony together with numerous high-ranking representatives from the British government, the armed forces and industry partners.
In her statement, the Minister also referred to the added value in the country: “HMS Sheffield is not only a state-of-the-art addition to our fleet, but also demonstrates our commitment to supporting thousands of skilled jobs and economic growth in Scotland and across the UK. This investment in our naval capability ensures that we can continue to protect our country’s interests while supporting UK industry.” https://militaeraktuell.at/kooperation-bundesheer-arbeiter-samariter-bund/ The Type 26 is one of the most advanced warships in the world. It is designed for anti-submarine warfare and high-intensity air defense. “These frigates will play a vital role in ensuring the security of our nation,” said Simon Dakin, Director General Core at the UK procurement agency DE&S. The ship will also be able to transport large quantities of humanitarian supplies and accommodate medical facilities. In addition, the construction of a construction of a new production hall, which was announced in December 2023 is well advanced. Named after the shipyard electrician Janet Harvey from the Second World War will ensure that two Type 26 frigates can be built side by side.
