On October 6, General in Ruhe Alfred Schätz passed away in Vienna at the age of 85. From 1990 to 2003, he headed the Army Intelligence Office as the highlight of his career, contributing to Austria’s security for many years.
In 1960, Schätz joined the
army
and graduated from the Theresian Military Academy in 1964. He was deployed in tank and armored artillery units, completed the general staff course and held leading positions in the general staff.

In 1990, he took over the leadership of the Army Intelligence Office, which he held until his retirement in 2003. After his active career, he worked as a consultant and scientist, including a dissertation on military policy during the Cold War. He remained loyal to the idea of security and service to the Republic and continued to support the Armed Forces as an advisor after his retirement.
“General Schätz served our country for decades with a sense of duty, expertise and loyalty. His work in the General Staff and at the head of the Army Intelligence Office has left its mark to this day. We mourn the loss of an outstanding personality in the Armed Forces,” emphasized Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner.
