Semi-automatic AR-15 rifles with a piston system are not often seen on the civilian market. As the many exhibitors at IWA 2024 with AR-15 derivatives showed us, direct gas-operated loaders are still more widespread. All the more pleasing: Antreg presented its ARS-M4 family with a short-stroke piston system with reduced recoil and lower weight to us in Nuremberg.
In the civilian sector, semi-automatic rifles of the AR-15 architecture tend to be direct gas-operated loaders rather than piston systems, i.e. rifles with a movable gas piston. In the military sector, the opposite is now the case, as the new assault rifles from Heckler & Koch in Germany and France show. Although not an AR-15 system, the tried-and-tested 77 assault rifle (-> New 77 A1 MOD assault rifle for the army) from Steyr Arms (-> the new managing director Tim Castagne in an interview: “New era for Arex and Steyr Arms”), which is used by the Austrian Armed Forces among others.

Piston systems generally offer several advantages: Due to their design, they require significantly less maintenance and they cope more easily with difficult environmental situations, such as mud. Disadvantages are usually the higher weight and allegedly – as is often heard – the (slightly) reduced accuracy at longer distances, as there is more movement in the barrel area and sometimes more recoil reaches the shooter. The latter is not confirmed by Antreg. Nevertheless, they have developed a technical solution to minimize recoil, as we were able to find out during our visit to the Antreg stand at IWA 2024. https://militaeraktuell.at/das-bundesheer-nimmt-fahrt-auf/ AR rifles were initially developed by Antreg (Czech Republic) for the military sector. The ARS M4 rifle is a fully automatic AR rifle with a piston system. The semi-automatic rifles developed later for sporting use became particularly popular with dynamic shooters. Antreg rifles are valued for their low manufacturing tolerances and backlash-free components, which we checked – superficially during the IWA 2024 trade fair – and were able to confirm in this context. The vast majority of parts are manufactured in the company’s own factory, emphasizes Antreg. The inside and outside nitrided barrels from Lothar Walther and the CTR stock and MOE pistol grip from Magpul are the exceptions.

What is noticeable in the details: the entire rifle concept is not aimed at bringing another AR-15 clone to the already large market of Black Rifle self-loading rifles. Ambidextrous operation as standard and flattened edges wherever possible show that these rifles are made for practical use. The gas release is easily accessible in the rail and can be quickly adjusted with a cartridge; everything else can be disassembled without tools. In addition, all components are manufactured in accordance with MIL-SPEC, which ensures compatibility with other AR accessories. The short-stroke piston system, the fore-end, upper and lower receiver and the bolt can be disassembled without tools.

However, Antreg self-loaders also have two surprises in store: if the Sport Piston is installed, the recoil in the ARS-M4 rifles with barrel lengths of 10.5, 12.5 and 14.5 inches is said to be reduced by 60 percent. With the longer barrels in 16.5 and 18 inches, the recoil is even reduced by 70 percent. Compared to the standard military gas piston, only 40 and 30 percent of the recoil should be noticeable. This is said to be made possible by a structural adaptation of the piston, which allows less of the gas to act on the gas block. When asked, Antreg stated that comparative measurements with other self-loading rifles, including those from Daniel Defense and the aforementioned HK416, were carried out and that the recoil of the ARS-M4 rifles was lower.
The marvel: the gas regulator and the piston, which is said to reduce recoil by up to 70 percent. The second surprise concerns the weight. According to Antreg, the ARS-M4 version 2.0, which will be delivered from May, will be the lightest piston rifles in the world. The ARS M4 0M (with 10.5 inch barrel and M-LOK handguard), for example, weighs 2.96 kilograms. With so many special characteristics, we will endeavor to test the Antreg rifles and report accordingly.
