As part of the contract concluded in December 2018, the Hungarian army received two additional H225M transport helicopters from Airbus Helicopters. A total of sixteen helicopters were ordered, including the two now delivered and the two recently delivered four rotorcraft of the new type are now in Hungary’s possession. On July 10, the H225Ms were delivered to the 86th MH Kiss József Helicopter Brigade in Szolnok. The next two helicopters are expected as early as December.
Hungarian Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky explained that it is not only important for the country’s security to make the Hungarian armed forces combat-ready, but that the investments also serve economic growth. The new helicopters will replace the ageing fleet of Soviet Mi-17s, which were introduced back in 1975. The H225M can carry up to 28 passengers, depending on how much load is carried – the Mi-17s can only carry 24 passengers. With roughly the same load capacity, the maximum speed and range of the Airbus helicopters are also better. The maximum speed is 325 km/h and the range is more than 820 kilometers.
