Airbus has received an order from the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) to equip 23 A400M air force transport aircraft with a new self-protection system. The so-called DIRCM system (“Directed Infrared Counter Measures”) is used to defend against missiles with infrared seeker heads and increases the protection of the aircraft during missions worldwide.
In addition to delivery, the contract also includes services such as training, service bulletins and special tools.
“Whether transporting troops, moving equipment and humanitarian goods, refuelling aircraft and helicopters or as a flying hospital – the Airbus A400M is the face and backbone of the German Air Force,” says Gerd Weber, Head of the A400M program at Airbus Defence and Space. “With the new DIRCM system, we will be offering the crews even greater protection in future and expanding the already impressive operational spectrum of this extraordinary aircraft.”
The protection systems come from the Israeli defense contractor Elbit Systems and are being installed by Airbus teams as part of scheduled maintenance work on a total of 23 A400Ms – at the Airbus sites in Manching (Bavaria), Getafe and Seville (Spain). The affected aircraft are currently used primarily for tactical missions, including medical evacuation flights to crisis areas. The logistical A400M variant, on the other hand, is used for long-haul transports of troops, heavy equipment or special equipment.
The DIRCM system is currently being tested in Seville on an A400M of the German Air Force. Certification is planned for summer 2025, with installation in all 23 aircraft to be completed by 2032.
