Rheinmetall proposes a “multi-layer approach” for the networked and digitalized combat operations of the future. This concept encompasses human intelligence and creativity as well as artificial intelligence, conventional weapon systems and unmanned or crewless systems. The new battle suite is a core element for networking all players and systems.
The new digital platform for networked military systems is designed to enable armed forces to conduct superior operations and was presented by Rheinmetall for the first time at the AFCEA in Bonn.
Rheinmetall believes that the ability to network conventional weapon systems with unmanned systems creates a “synergistic effect”, in which the advantages of both worlds – the precision and flexibility of unmanned systems and the robustness and versatility of conventional systems – are brought to bear. “This enables holistic warfare, in which each system complements the respective strengths of the other and relieves the burden on humans,” says the German armaments company in a recent press release.
The Battlesuite acts as a central “hub” for data flow and decision-making, supported by AI, network architecture and cybersecurity protocols.
The Battlesuite is based on Blackned’s Tactical Core – the operating system, so to speak – and extends this with a basically infinite number of available or future applications – similar to the app architecture of a smartphone. The Battlesuite integrates both products developed in-house by Rheinmetall and applications from partners. This combination is intended to create synergies and offer numerous application possibilities.
Furthermore, the Battlesuite should enable different users to exchange information in real time and thus generate a constantly updated situation picture. All units on the battlefield can therefore access the same information and thus have a significantly improved basis for decision-making.
This should enable decisions to be made more quickly and with greater precision. Time, material and personnel could be used more optimally, while at the same time increasing the effectiveness of operations. “Digitalization and networking not only strengthen operational flexibility, but also sustainability in resource planning and application,” concludes Rheinmetall.
