The Dutch armed forces’ Puma mini UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) have reached the end of their service life. The US manufacturer Aerovironment will therefore modernize the Puma drones. They are to be delivered this year so that they can be deployed at various levels throughout the armed forces in the future.

In addition to the Dutch armed forces, the Puma drones are also in service with the US Marine Corps.

The existing Puma AE Block II will be upgraded to the new Block III version. This allows the drone to operate in GNSS-free environments. Other functions will also be optimized and it will receive a kit for vertical take-off and landing. In addition, the Puma LE will be introduced as a larger version, which will enable a longer operating time in the air.

The new Puma drones are equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Experience from the war in Ukraine was also incorporated into the further development (-> current news from the war in Ukraine), “making them suitable for the requirements of dynamic military operations”, according to a recent press release from the Dutch armed forces.

Designed primarily for reconnaissance purposes, the mini-UAS improve situational awareness by monitoring large areas and detecting potential dangers at an early stage – such as roadblocks or suspicious vehicles. In addition to military applications, the drones are also suitable for civilian purposes.

The revised Puma drones can be deployed flexibly – whether from vehicles such as the Fennek or directly by soldiers on foot. Mini-UAS are particularly indispensable for reconnaissance units during operations.

Modernization of the land forces

The renewal of the Puma drones is part of a comprehensive modernization plan by the Dutch land forces to expand the capabilities of their Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). The first modernized systems are to be introduced at squad and platoon level this year. An expansion to company level is planned from 2026.
