On 28 January, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner adopted 48 Austrian Armed Forces-athletes, including 17 women, in a ceremony at the Rossau barracks. This was followed by the official swearing-in of the Olympic athletes by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen. They will compete at the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina from February 6 to 22.

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “The Olympic Games are a symbol of peace and unity in the world – athletes are ambassadors of these values. They not only carry the colors of our country, but also the hopes and dreams of many. The outstanding achievements, team spirit and tireless commitment of the army’s athletes have already impressed at international competitions in the past. I wish all athletes all the best and every success in Milan and Cortina.”

Austria’s Olympic team comprises a total of 115 athletes – 48 are competitive athletes from the Austrian Armed Forces. This means that the Austrian Armed Forces make up a significant share of more than 41 percent of the red-white-red team. Among the ski jumpers, corporals Jan Hörl and Daniel Tschofenig and Lisa Eder will be fighting for a medal for Austria. In the combined event, the focus will be on corporal Johannes Lamparter. The lugers and snowboarders are also among the medal hopes based on their recent international competition results.

The Army Sports Center has been promoting Austrian competitive sport with its eleven Army Sports Centers since 1962. Every year, almost 500 people, 30 of them in disabled sports, are part of the Army Sports support program. Army sport traditionally provides numerous participants in major sporting events such as the Olympic Games and European and World Championships. The athletes of the Austrian Armed Forces have already achieved countless successes and medals for Austria in the past.
